Quiltalong - 2026

Back in April the lightbulb in my sewing machine went out. I had to special order one from SewingPartsOnline.com, and since I was going to have pay shipping anyways, I took a look around the site. I ended up buying this pair of awls/stilettos. I have a stiletto that I really like, but what I wanted to try was the rubber tipped “pusher” one that came with it. I also want to make a pair of silk pants from a recycled sari, so I picked up silk pins and machine needles, and a new set of tweezers for my serger. (The two pair I have are both bent and useless.)

I was searching for quilt labels I could have on hand for projects where I didn’t have time to embroider one, and would also have quilt care instructions. I found these labels on Etsy, from Sarah Hearts, and snatched them up. And in the process fell in love with a bunch of her merch. I brought these ones home.

…and I have a bunch more stuff in my shopping cart online.

I don’t have a lot of quilting merchandise (at least not directly quilting related). I do love this shirt. Finally got a pic (it’s stored because it fits smaller than sized, so I can’t quite wear it yet)

Question re: Great WIP Challenge:

If it’s, say, my quilt guild name badge… which I started 10 years ago, never finished, lost… started again 6 years ago, lost… then started AGAIN early this month… would that count? (If so I’ll make sure to find this latest one and finish tomorrow. I think I know where I stashed it)

Based on the Frolic quilt pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew, except I just kept sewing until I used up all my fabric. I started this one in January or so, and finished in March-ish? when I had finished stitching the quilt above, but wasn’t looking forward to quilting it. Of course, starting another quilt is the best solution to the “I don’t want to quilt” issue … I quilted the Chromaticity quilt after I pieced the Frolic top, so I must have finished it by mid-March or so. It looks pretty coherent, but it’s actually made from yardage, a mini charm pack and a regular charm pack that I all acquired at different times. I think the fabric is all by Moda though. I picked up a backing in a similar pattern / colours from a remnant bin at the craft fair and I think it’s from the same range or a similar range as well, but I haven’t quilted it yet. This quilt will probably be gifted to someone as the “not quite white” background colour bothers me a little bit. The colours on this picture are slightly off, because we’re in a heatwave and we’re keeping the curtains closed.

I have lost yet another quilt guild name tag! The only reason it wasn’t already done is because I have to embroider my name on it before finishing. I know vaguely where it’s at but couldn’t locate it when frantically looking today.

I am starting a new project today with … 50% stash and 50% fabric bought today. Pic of inspiration. This was a kit being sold at a thrift store, but I really didn’t need more fabric.

That being said… we have a non-profit thrift store in my city that was given all the fabric and quilting stuff from an elderly woman’s estate. 115 bins of fabric… and more coming next week. When I was there Saturday they were putting out the contents of 30 bins at a time. Today they also put out bolts. They had 2 1/2 rows of bolts, a whole table of kits and bagged fabric, a shelf full of fat quarter bundles, random stuff everywhere, plus a whole back room full. $10 kits, 2 yds/$5, $1 single items… but also the more you buy the more the guy is willing to bargain. I talked him into $75 worth of stuff today for $30. They sold over $7500 Saturday. He has one of his friends sharing to all our local quilt groups and they’ve been overrun haha.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier today. The answer would be that so long as the badge was quilted or used quilting methods (ie. piecing, paper piecing), then yes it would count. That’s frustrating that you ended up being unable to locate the badge!

That sounds like a great deal for both quilters and the thrift store, win-win!

It’s also a good warning though, why it’s important to use up stash. Even if you live in a place where quilting supplies aren’t always easily available (like me) and it’s convenient to have some supplies on hand, you don’t really want to die with what sounds like ten thousands of $ worth of stash.

-I MistressJennie, submit Cut out pot holder kits for QAYG class at Allerton for my goal list entry.
I finally finished cutting & putting together kits for my Quilt As You Go Potholder class, this weekend at Allerton. I have 5 colorways/patterns for them to choose from, with duplicates of each, for a total of 13 kits. I might put together a few more, for added variety, if I have time this week after writing up the tutorial, which I need to start on today. I believe I’ve spent about 8 hours putting these together. Each contains backing, batting, Insul-bright, binding, & front piecing strips.

I was going to add in mini quilt-sandwichs made of scraps for the students to practice stitching on, but I might just bring those along, and hand them out in class, since I only have 7 students. (The leftover kits will be put aside for me to teach the class again in a few months or next year.)

Blues, with a fun floral print focal, that allowed me to pull in a few bits of green, grey & navy, with light blue backgrounds. (Mostly from a FQ bundle from Walmart.) There are 2 of this colorway/backing combo.

Brights, with a lemons-on-cyan print as the backing and focal, with greens & pinks. I hope these work up nice and vibrant. The lemon, bright pink floral, and lime cross-hatch came from Walmart, with other scraps from various sources. There are 4 of these.

Black, cream, and gold Bees. Again from a FQ bundle from Walmart, with a pre-cut yard of black for binding and grey backs. There are 3 of these. (Plus 1 I am using to make my tutorial.)

Possibly the most fun one. Since finishing my Wonder Woman kids quilt, I have had a few scraps sitting on my table; strips smaller than 2.5" wide. I pulled out the 2 2.5" strips I had stashed, and found a few bits of 1.25" strips, and some scrap binding strips that came from leftover quilt backing. There are 2 of these.

And finally, 2 more of the blue FQ bundle, but paired with a dark green backing, and more green & teal strips. There are 2 of these.

Your kits are so well curated! You clearly put a lot of time and effort into them - seriously, you could have thrown anything together, but you went above and beyond. Your efforts make it clear that you care about the success of your students. They’re very fortunate to have you as their teacher!

I, AudiobookLover, submit Embroider SSB blocks and stitch together - section 4 (aka the final section!) for my goal list entry.

I foolishly thought this might finally be the section I sew together without the seam ripper having to come out - silly, silly me, lol.

Now that the sections are all done, I just need to finish stitching up the borders. Then I’ll bring it all to San Diego to finish up.

-I MistressJennie, offer Tula Pink Scrappy Potholders for my small challenge entry.
I’m still working on my tutorial for my potholder class, but they emailed and asked if I could send some new pictures. So I whipped up a set for my kitchen, out of scraps of Ada’s quilt. All the strips were too narrow to go in my 2.5" strip bin, and have been sitting on my desk. Now there are less scraps laying around and my kitchen will be cuter.

@AudiobookLover, I know I submitted the Green Teacher Tote as my Small Challenge entry, but this seems more like a Small, than a Medium, when compared to the tote. Can we change my Tote entry to a Medium, and make this my small?

Just for fun, this is the set I made for the tutorial. (And have 3 kits made up to match.) I have most of it written up, but need to edit photos and insert them into the text, and see what I missed. I plan to post the tutorial here on LC when it’s done, like I did with the Mug Rug one.

Only problem: So far I only have 1 signup for my class. It’s set for 2-7 students. I sent new photos today, so they can put them out on their social media and hopefully get a few more spots filled. My SIL @Jennalou is thinking of coming up for it. I’d love getting some sister time with her!

I hope more people enroll! Your tutorials here are always so thorough and you’re an amazing quilter, I just know people could learn so much from your class. Maybe people will sign up closer to the date? My impression is these days a lot of people don’t really like to plan far into the future anymore. I hope the new pictures for social media help.

I plan to cut the fabric for the BOM today. The block is perfect for the amount of fabric I still have left. Then, maybe, I can find the time to work on the “home” challenge? I still have almost a month and we’re starting to get into the slower season at work so I’m not as tired in the evenings.

Ok, this is a weird one. I learned to quilt as a kid, then stopped throughout high school and college. I was busy making costumes for Renn Faire and college theatre shows. When I graduated from college, I finished in December, but wouldn’t start Grad School until the following August, so I had about 8 months at home without much to do. At Joann’s one day, I fell in love with this embroidered linen, which was rather pricey. But there were several chunks of it in the remnants bin, some 7/8 of a yard, some smaller. But all were half price, so I snatched them up even though I didn’t know what to do with it. My mom ended up loving it too and found a coordinating cranberry corduroy, and basically bullied me into making this Irish Chain with it. She pushed for the green fabric, which is a thin suedecloth, because she was into suede finish paint all over the house. (The early 2000’s was a weird time.) It’s been sitting for 22-23 years, and the fabrics are fraying on the back seams.

So I have this Queen sized top, and no idea what to do with it. It’s way too big to quilt on my domestic machine. It would cost a fortune to have a long-armer do it, if anyone would even take the project, since the fabrics are all non-quilting fabrics. And if someone did quilt it, how would they do so? It would end up quilting right over the embroidery! So I have no idea what the heck to do with this thing, but there are hours of work in it, and it seems insane to throw it out.

Now I’m going to go hide my shameful secret back in its bin…

You can tie it instead of quilt it? The pattern based on squares would be ideal for it. It would also disrupt the embroidery much less, and it would take a lot less time. At least you’d be able to use it. Otherwise, deconstruct it?
