Quiltalong - 2026

I’m in Dublin today at a juried art show, one of the biggest in the country, this piece of work was there. Pieced and appliqued. About life size.

Interesting to see what people do when they push the medium

Guys, I’m tired. We drove home from St. Louis yesterday afternoon. Today I had to drive an hour and 10 minutes away, to drop my sewing machine off to be serviced at a quilt shop, then that whole drive home again. (The estimate on turn around time is 3 weeks. And yes, I did some shopping too.) My sewing table looks so empty right now.

The 4 FQ’s on the top seem to be coordinates, but I have no idea who the designer is, because none of them have selvage with info on it. I’m thinking of trying to make some sort of wall quilt, or some totes with them.

The floral and lime green just looked nice together, so I think I’ll search for a project for them. And the other three were just pretty blenders to add to stash.

Meanwhile, the extension table for my machine is broken, and has been for years. You can’t order a replacement, and since it’s molded plastic, it can’t be repaired. I asked if they ever get ahold of one from old machines, and she offered to check the back room. Guess what she found?!?! Did I want it for $30? Yes. Yes I did!

That is great that she found a replacement for that piece!

The fabrics are wonderful!

On the way to DC, my college roommate and I stopped in a newly opened fabric warehouse about 1-1/2 from my house. All fabrics were $5 a yard! They were name brands as well.

Also, @edel, congrats on winning the WIP contest! I have not worked on a single WIP all year. UGH!

You guys! I just realized that the main item I’m making for this quarter’s prize pack is reversible! I flipped it inside out and I don’t know which side I like best, I love them both!!

@MistressJennie and @AIMR, I’m looking forward to seeing what you both come up with for your new fabrics! Congrats on finding that replacement extension table, Jennie! Linda, fabric shopping with your college roommate sounds like a great way to spend time together!

I cut the BOM a while ago and I’m going to piece it today. Every time I’m cutting I feel like I’ve almost run out of fabric, but then I start cutting and it’s not as bad. I thought I’d only have enough for the first six, but there’s a lot of fabric left, let’s see how many months I can finish from these FQs!

I recently purchased another set of FQ’s, intended for the next BOM-quilt. I needed an excuse to buy that beautiful fabric on discount (Kitzbühel II series by Westfalenstoffe, a well known German manufacturer) but it’s also a little bit of a reward for me. This is the first time I’ve been able to keep up with the BOM all year.

I’m trying to figure out what my next project should be. I still need to quilt my previous project, but I still haven’t been able to take my machine for re-adjustment. I gathered fabric for an FPP-winter themed (red and blue) quilt for myself, and I thought that was going to be the next project, I even printed the FPP templates already. But as I was getting ready for cutting I found out I still don’t have enough fabric. Same for the spring-themed quilt I was planning to make after that one, it still needs 2 yards of a matching white. Quilting fabric isn’t always easy to get here, and most quilt shops only have limited opening times (this is the kind of fabric I want to see with my own eyes).

Lol, this is why I usually do scrappy quilts. Much more convenient to start with what you already have!

Some tips for the BOM, I think I may be the first one to start it this month? I don’t think I’ve seen pictures yet.

The hourglass block is made two at a time. It might be my lack of precision but for me the block runs small. Then, you cut around 1/3 of the hourglass block away and when you do that, make sure you cut them all in the right direction! That means - the fabric you’ve used on the central block should be the fabric that’s left and right on the hourglass. The contrasting fabric should be top and bottom.

This penny dropped in my brain the literal moment I was cutting the last block. I didn’t even do them all the wrong way - I did three wrong, one right! I laid the block out, and honestly it doesn’t really bother me, so I’m going to finish this block anyway, it just doesn’t really look like the picture. It’s definitely not a star now, more like a cross. But hey, nobody knows it’s supposed to be a star, right?

ETA:

I, Immaculata , submit this as my current June BOM entry. and I also submit this as a completed goal

We hung some quilts up! First was Ada’s wall quilt:

I bought a damaged quilt at a quilt show a in 2023, intending to hang it on the wall in our dining room when we decorated it. But by the time we got around to it, the look we were going for had changed and the quilt didn’t go with the vibe, so it got put aside. Meanwhile my mom found a set of special clips used to hang quilts, at Goodwill for just a few bucks. Jim can’t really do much yard work today, so we’re tackling a few small projects around the house. He hung up the clips, so we could add the quilt to our Library.

I, Immaculata , submit this Halloween tote as my small personal finish

I saw pictures of a very similar tote online and figured I could make my own version! This used four Lewis + Irene FQ’s plus a bit of black yardage I had in stash. I used up the black and orange but I have some scraps left from the purple pocket.

I cut the orange FQ in four strips and added one strip to the top and bottom of both the lining and the outside fabric. I used the full FQ in it’s original size for those. Then I ironed fusible fleece on to the outside fabric and quilted it in a simple X pattern using Gutermann Sulky Cotton 30 in a variegated purple colour. I also used it to top stitch the straps. Quilting was very easy, I drew one line from each corner, like an X, using chalk, and then used the adjustable bar that attaches to my walking foot for the other stitching.

I decided to add pockets to the lining because who wouldn’t. Just two basic pockets, one on each side. Pictures of the lining were taken before I stitched the tote together.

Fun fact: it’s almost impossible to take a good picture of it, but the fabrics GLOW IN THE DARK.

I’ve been asking so many people if fabric glows in the dark lately (and pouting when it doesn’t). So many things look like they should, but don’t.

I zoomed in to see the variegated thread. I love that detail and how the purple gives a fun pop of unexpected color!

I looked up the Kitzbühel II fabric. Is it the red and gray fabrics? If so, I like that pop of red on the bird print. I’m looking forward to seeing the BOMs you make with it!

You can see it best on the straps. I couldn’t resist buying the thread, it looked so nice, and this was a good project to use it for.

Yes, it’s the red and grey fabrics! It’s technically a Christmas fabric but it’s not a traditional Chridtmas style. The midcentury-ish birds are my favourite print too. Westfalenstoffe is one of the few European quilt fabric designers (that I know of at least). Because the fabric isn’t imported it’s more affordable, but I also just really liked this fabric range.

I Edel do hearby declare that these two small bits of work allow me to tick off 2 goals (2 quilting days and 1 section of balloon dog FPP) And two bingos (still trying to complete every bingo prompt!)

Starting a new project and threading my machine

I’m making this and every time I restart FPP I have to learn how to do it all over again. I’m at my quilting day, my sewing machine is fighting me, my iron marked the fabric, I didn’t bring enough of one colour. Aaarrrgggh!

Mostly I’m relearning to stop using such piddly little parsimonious pieces of fabrics for FPP

Love the balloon puppy colors, so bright. I am a FPP fabric miser too. But those angles really mess with my brain. But the results will be stunning!
