Quiltalong - 2026

I’m trying to decide which finish sashing I want to do on this wall quilt.

  1. Dark green border with brown binding
  2. Narrow brown border with a wider dark green band, no or dark green binding

I am leaning towards no. 1. I could not match the dark green sashing without buying every similar green fabric on line and I have no where to go match in person. The border fabric is a bit darker, but works well.

I actually like both, I’m not sure I could choose..I do like the double border of brown+green but I think the green next to the blocks looks a little more harmonious

I like #1 best.

I like #2 the best as well. I think it completes the framing of the outside pieces and feels more balanced to me.

I love asking the community a design question. You seldom get a definitive answer, but the comments always help. And it is fun!.

#1 for me as well

I agree and prefer #2 for the same reasons.

I actually think either will look nice. I find that I sometimes go the “safe” route and that a small change would make the quilt more interesting. I just like all sorts of combos, I guess!

I, AIMR, submit this as my current June BOM. This is also one of my completed goals for the 2nd Qrt.

I, AIMR, submit this as a late May BOM. This was one of my 1st quarter goals that I did not complete, but I liked the pattern so I made it anyway. I am spending the rest of the weekend making more blocks to catch up through the quarter.

Oh, well my reason for choosing the first one is because it looks like traditional matting & framing of a picture & that piece is quite picturous so it made the most visual sense to my brain. Like, there’s so much contrast in the body it didn’t seem to be improved by more around the edges. Even though the green is slightly different that added just a hint of border to distinguish the squares from the frame.

I just realized that I meant the green framing, so #1. I just got confused in my typing. When I read @magpie’s post, I thought, well that is exactly how my brain works as well…except for confusing the numbers part! OOPS!

Thanks for all the comments. I think I like no. 1 better. I don’t like how the shashing cuts off at the edge in no. 2. It is a wall hanging and I think the green with a brown border will let the birds be the focal point as intended.

I Edel have completed a personal goal this quarter, I got another section of the wanderers wife quilt done (the worst pattern ever!) that makes 4/10.

But while assembling this, I used some leftover triangles from my postcards from Sweden quilt. Came across them in a clean up (stress cleaning and sewing, traveling tomorrow). The triangles were very handy as leaders and enders, there was just enough to make this cushion cover. I’ve backed and lightly quilted the front for stability. Some of those triangle cuts are dodgy!

And in situ with my growing collection of lovely cushion covers.

It just occurs to me that could be a fun swap. A pieced cushion cover-just the front, rather than a fully assembled one, so postage would be cheap. (I’m up for a personal swap if you tell me your size and colour choices.)

Linda, your BOM is lovely!

@Edel, heck yeah for finishing another section of such a monster project! And cute cushion!

I dropped my machine off to be serviced last Friday. The closest place that could do it was 1.25 hours away, so it was a long ride. They told me it would take 3 weeks, but on Saturday I got a call saying it was done. Two weeks sooner than expected! Woot! So I ran right over to get it. (Made it there about 15 minutes before they closed.) I picked up some Fat Quarters and yardage for a new project.

I’m attempting to create a new class for Allerton, where students would create a “whole quilt” in a day, albeit a small one. I was looking for a block pattern that could work as a wall quilt, and would include a few of the most used quilt block components, like HSTs and Flying Geese. I found this Illinois Star block, which I think people will enjoy. This is my prototype. It’s 18” square. I’m going to add a border. I used blue for the sky, dark green for soybean fields, light green and gold as corn, purple for the state flower, violets, and the red for the state bird, the cardinal.

Btw @AudiobookLover, if we still need BOM suggestions, this one is fun!

That’s a beauty!

I am on a kick to make very colorful things. I got burned out on white, grey, and black background colors. Plus, I love batiks so much.

I don’t feel like slogging through my Wandering Wife blocks either. Totally thinking of abandoning it and using the blocks I have so far in a different project.

I love your colorful pillows!
