WELCOME TO THE ALL NEW, REIMAGINED, HARRY POTTER CRAFTALONG!

The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired.

If you have been curious about us in the past, but worried about joining such a long-running Craftalong, NOW is the perfect time to join in. The Craftalong has been reimagined, and is going in new direction. Each session we will have prompts inspired by the Wizarding World, Molly’s Housecraft Challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & the occasional Minister of Magic Mission. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans for your Team. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much as you like.

Each regular project is worth 10 Bertie Bott’s Beans for your Team. LC Challenge entries, items for LC Swaps, or charity creations, will all earn you 10 Bonus Beans! And Minister for Magic Missions earn a whopping 30 Beans! At the end of each term, we will take an average of each Team’s total, and declare a winning Team!

This first “All New Term” is inspired by the locations in the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

To participate, first choose a team. Then read through the prompts below, create a craft to fit the challenge, and post it here. If your project doesn’t fit any prompts, or if you’ve already fulfilled a prompt it fits, simply label it as Crafter’s Choice. (You may submit Crafter’s Choice as many times as needed.) That’s all there is to it!

Prompts
Chamber of Secrets - Part Two
(Covering Chapters 10-end of the book)

:stop_sign: Restricted Section - Hermione asks Prof Lockhart for permission to get a book from the Restricted Section of the Library. Moste Potent Potions contained recipes for advanced potions, many of which had gruesome effects. Please craft something with an old or vintage pattern (30+ years old), such as a classic quilt block. Alternately you may craft something gross, or with unpleasant components, such as making a batch of glitter slime with your kids, or cooking with an ingredient you dislike.

:broom: Quidditch Pitch - As the Gryffindors face the Slytherin team in the first match of the season, Oliver Wood tells Harry to “Get to that Snitch before Malfoy or die trying”. Unfortunately a Bludger has been bewitched to focus relentlessly on him. As Harry flies loops around the pitch to avoid it, he spots the Snitch just above Malfoy’s ear. As he dives for, and ultimately grabs the Snitch, his arm is broken by the Bludger. Please share a project that you simply must complete, no matter what. Or work on a pesky ongoing project that keeps demanding your attention.

:hospital: Hospital Wing - After an inept Lockhart removes all the bones in Harry’s arm, he’s taken to the Hospital Wing. Madam Pomfrey gives him Skele-gro, to begin the painful process of regrowing bones. Dobby visits in the night, and begs Harry to leave Hogwarts, warning that “history is to repeat itself”. Moments later a petrified Colin Creevey is brought in. Please recraft something you’ve made before. (Your go-to dishcloth pattern, a favorite shirt dress, etc.) Alternately you may channel your inner Gryffindor, and dive into a project that has petrified you in the past. (An exceptionally difficult pattern or medium.)

:test_tube: Potions Dungeon - In order for Hermione to steal potions ingredients from Snape’s private stores, Harry throws a Filibuster’s Firework into Goyle’s cauldron, causing his Swelling Solution to explode all over the classroom. Students are weighed down with swollen heads and arms, and need a Deflating Draught. Use a rare, or valuable supply from stash. Or use a supply you were gifted/inherited, or… salvaged in some way.

:crossed_swords: Dueling Club - The Trio attends a Dueling Club, taught by Professors Lockhart & Snape. Lockhart is no match for Snape’s Expelliarus charm, and is knocked to the ground. Lockhart claims he could have stopped Snape’s spell, if he wanted to, but allowed himself to be hit so the students could see a disarming spell. Please share a craft that didn’t go as planned, or where you learned something unexpected. Alternately you may combine supplies or ingredients that aren’t normally related, or are considered opposites, such as a salty & sweet snack, or an afghan made of opposites on the color wheel.

:books: Back of the Library - Harry decides to go talk to Justin Finch-Fletchley, about using Parsletongue with the snake. Instead he overhears a group of Hufflepuffs, talking about Harry being the Heir of Slytherin, and a Dark Wizard. Please craft something using a pattern, material, or technique you heard of from another crafter.

:fire: Dumbledore’s Office - On his way out of the library, finds Justin and Nearly Headless Nick, both petrified. He’s taken to Dumbledore’s Office, a beautiful circular room, full of curious silver instruments emitting little puffs of smoke, portraits of old headmasters & mistresses snoozing in their frames, and the Sorting Hat. Worried, Harry tries it on, and it repeats that he would have done well in Slytherin. Soon Fawkes the phoenix bursts into flames. Please create something circular (or with a circular tool like circular knitting needles), something silver in color, a portrait, a hat or other headwear, or something that requires heat or fire to complete (such as pottery fired in a kiln or a recipe cooked on a stovetop). Alternately you may give an old item, new life, such as refinishing a piece of furniture.

:christmas_tree: Christmas Dinner in the Great Hall - The Great Hall is decorated magnificently for Christmas; frost covered trees, garlands of holly and mistletoe, and enchanted snow falling (warm & dry) from the ceiling. Please craft something decorative, or redecorate an area of your home.

:toilet: Moaning Myrtle’s Bathroom - Harry & Ron drug & hide the unconscious Crabbe & Goyle in a broom cupboard, and steal some of their hairs, then return to Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom where the Polyjuice Potion has finally finished brewing. They pour glasses of the disgusting looking potion, tip in the hairs, and each take their dose. Harry & Ron are transformed, but Hermione, from inside a stall, says she can’t go after all, and sends the boys away. Please craft something where the supplies just came together perfectly (ex, finding the perfect fabrics in your stash), something where the components look unpleasant, or a project that came together in a surprising or unexpected way.

:green_circle: Slytherin Common Room - Harry & Ron infiltrate the Slytherin Common Room with Malfoy. It is a long, low, underground room, with rough stone walls, and round green lamps hanging from the ceiling. There are high backed chairs, and an elaborately carved fireplace. Malfoy shows them an article from the Daily Prophet about Mr. Weasley being fined for enchanting the Ford Anglia, and complains about the Ministry raiding their Manor the previous week. Please craft something round, something green, something with a stone component, or raid your stash and craft something entirely with materials you had on hand.

:ocean: Flooded Corridor (Pt. 2) - After visiting Hermione in the Hospital Wing, Harry & Ron find the corridor outside Myrtle’s bathroom flooded again. Myrtle complains that someone threw a book at her while she was sitting in the U-bend. Despite Ron’s warnings that it could be dangerous, Harry collects the thin black book, which turns out to be the diary of T. M. Riddle, and is dated 50 years previous. Please craft something that includes water in its creation, a book or planner/journal, something from a book (such as a pattern from a craft book), or something black in color.

:sleeping_bed: Dormitory - Harry goes to bed early to examine Riddle’s diary. He tries writing in it, and soon the diary is answering him, and even offers to show Harry what happened 50 years before. Harry is taken inside Riddle’s memory, to the night he “caught” Hagrid. Later Harry finds his dormitory ransacked, and the diary missing. Please craft something that makes a huge mess, or uses a hard-to-find supply. Alternately, you may clean & organize your messy crafting space, or craft something to help you sleep.

:hut: Hagrid’s Cabin - Harry & Ron use the Invisibility Cloak to go ask Hagrid the Chamber of Secrets. Just as he begins making tea, Professor Dumbledore & Cornelius Fudge arrive and the boys hide under the cloak. Fudge says he is under a lot of pressure, and must be seen to be doing something about the attacks; he arrests Hagrid. Lucius Malfoy appears moments later, with an Order of Suspension for Dumbledore. Dumbledore objects to Hagrid’s arrest, and tells them all that he will only truly have left, when none there are loyal to him. Please craft something that requires the use of pressure in its creation (making buttons, canning jam), or by using a pattern or supply you are very loyal to. Alternatively, you may craft something for tea time.

:spider: The Forbidden Forest - Harry & Ron follow the spiders into the Forbidden Forest, where they meet Aragog, who tells them that Hagrid never opened the Chamber of Secrets. Aragog says he is not the monster attacking people, and that the spiders will not speak the creature’s name. When the boys go to leave, Aragog tells them he’s going to let his children eat them. “I cannot deny them fresh meat, when it wanders so willingly into our midst.” Please craft something ‘meaty’. This could be literally, as in a classic beef chili, or a meaty (yet vegetarian) Portabella mushroom burger. Alternately you may create something outside your comfort zone, or something that uses fibers, such as thread or yarn.

:blue_car: Front Seat of the Ford Anglia - Harry & Ron are rescued by the Ford Anglia, which has gone feral in the forest. Please craft something that you can just fly through (like a pattern you have memorized); something wild; something pastel in color, or a project that you couldn’t do without a trusted machine.

:teapot: Staff Room - Harry & Ron go to the Staffroom to find Prof. McGonagall, where they overhear her telling the teachers that Ginny Weasley has been taken by the monster. Professor Lockhart comes in late, much to the consternation of the other teachers. They remind him of all the boasts he has made about how he could take on the monster himself, and tell him this is his big shot at last. Please craft something you’ve talked about doing, but haven’t gotten around to before now. Alternately you may take a big chance in your crafting. This could be playing yarn chicken, or trying a technique that you’re uncertain of.

:luggage: Lockhart’s Office - The boys go to see Lockhart, to tell him where the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is, only to find him packing to leave. He admits he never did any of the things he claimed in his books; instead taking credit for things other Wizards had done, then modifying their memories so they forgot. For this challenge, please feel free to take a shortcut in your crafting. Use a ‘cheater quilt’ fabric, spend time decorating cupcakes that you made with a packaged mix, etc. Alternately you may craft something for taking a trip, like sewing a Weekender Bag, or craft something on a trip, such as crocheting on a long train ride.

:snake: Chamber of Secrets - Harry & Ron force Lockhart to go with them to the Chamber of Secrets. He steals Ron’s broken wand and attempts to Obliviate them, but the wand backfires, leaving him without any memories. Harry goes on to find Ginny, cold and nearly dead. Sstanding there is Memory Riddle, who has left the Diary. Riddle questions Harry about how he survived Voldemorte, then calls the Basilisk to kill him. Harry begs for help from anywhere, and Fawkes arrives with the school Sorting Hat. Fawkes blinds the Basilisk, and Harry pulls the Sword of Gryffindor out of the hat, then runs the Basilisk through. Harry is stabbed in the arm by a fang, and is dying. Fawkes cries pearly tears to heal him, and Harry stabs the diary with a Basilisk fang, destroying it and reviving Ginny. Please craft something with a sharp object (needle, scissors, knife), something pearlescent, or something that will invigorate you or the recipient. Alternately you may finish a WIP that you had completely forgotten about.

:lion: McGonagall’s Office - Fawkes leads Harry, Ron, Ginny & Lockhart to Prof. McGonagall’s office, where they find Dumbledore, and a very relieved Mr. & Mrs. Weasley. Harry recounts the story for them. Dumbledore gives Harry & Ron awards for special services to the school, and 200 points each, and sends Lockhart, Ginny & the Weasleys to the Hospital Wing for hot chocolate and rest, and Prof. McGonagall to the kitchens to organize a feast. Harry confesses that Riddle said he & Harry were alike, and that the Sorting Hat had considered putting him in Slytherin, but Harry had asked not to be placed there. Dumbledore points out that it is “our choices… that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Please share something which demonstrates your own particular choices. For example, perhaps you fell in love with a quilt pattern that was done in white & pastels, but you decided to create one in brights and black tones. Alternatively you may create something involving chocolate.

:socks: Hallway - Lucius Malfoy arrives (accompanied by a terrified Dobby), furious that Dumbledore has returned. Harry deduces that he was the one to give Ginny the diary, in Flourish & Blott’s. When Lucius storms out of the office, Harry stuffs the diary in one of his filthy socks, and follows. Harry shoves them into Mr. Malfoy’s hands. Lucius rips the sock off, throwing it at Dobby, and warning Harry that he will meet the ‘same sticky end’ as his parents. When he orders Dobby to follow him out, Dobby replies that he has been given a sock, and is now free. Malfoy advances on Harry, for tricking him out of a servant, but Dobby defends Harry, and sends Malfoy sprawling down the stairs. Please craft something for your feet, something that uses a sticky element (such as glue or honey) in its creation, or something that requires a special trick to complete. Alternately you may finish a project that has been looming over you.

Hello friends! How is everyone doing now that the holidays are over, and put away for the year? Are you stuck in the winter doldrums and lacking inspiration? Or are you overwhelmed with ideas, and simultaneously itching to get outside for the oncoming spring? Is it warm or cold where you are? Is anyone excited for the Super Bowl this weekend, or were you unaware it was happening?

I am knee-deep in a remodel. It is having the most unpleasant effect on my crafting mojo. I have been too busy trying to keep life functional with people coming and going and tearing everything up to do more than knit a bit here and there. Too busy putting together rooms (in a managerial sense, mostly, but there is the matter of the stuff from IKEA…) to put together any big projects.

So, here’s my first project of the term…

Prompt/Challenge Title: Hospital Wing
Project Name & Page Link: Mr Blue/Grey Skies Musselburgh
Team: The Daily Prophet
Brief Description: I’m using the Musselburgh Hat pattern as a security blanket of sorts. It’s a comfy, relaxing knit that I’ve done so many times I could knit it from memory. No stress and perfect for busting my stash of yummy yarns that were purchased for the dopamine hit. This one is sock yarn that wasn’t needed for the last batch of Musselburghs, silk mohair that was on sale and had to be sampled, and that gorgeous variegated Malabrigo mohair from the yarn store crawl.

Beautiful! I’m not usually much of a fan of grey, but that grey is dreamy with the hints of blue and purple. Really nice.

Met up with a friend at our local makerspace, and now the brain is just spinning with all the ideas! We still have much snow and winter here in Sweden. I dont expect spring until late march. But we have had some sun and 0 degrees Celsius, which have felt very spring-y!
I hope you, who are watching Super Bowl have a nice event, not anything I know anything about.

I had forgotten the superbowl was this weekend. It’s usually a good chance to knit or crochet while I eat snacks and my family shouts at the screen. We’ll see what I can accomplish during the game!

I’ve been struggling to craft for a while while we worked our way through some medical issues for several family members. Now that things seem to have settled a bit I’m hoping to see an upswing in my crafting from here forward.

Trill, I think I was channeling you as I wrote up the latest Round-up…

I have lots of crafty ideas and I’m looking forward to spring! It’s quite snowy where I am (it’s just about time to shovel the snow from my roof for the second time this winter).

I don’t pay much attention to sports, so I won’t be watching the superbowl. I’ll probably read/craft/play video games/etc like any other weekend.

All your pretty musselberghs make me want to get the pattern!

I went deep into some video game/TV watching escapism in January because of gestures at everything but am starting to come out of it now.

Our friend group is so not into sports that we scheduled our normal board game day for this Sunday and no one even mentioned the Superbowl LOL.

I realized last night, that I should have invited friends over (two weeks in advance) to watch the Puppy Bowl on Max. It would be the parts of a Super Bowl Party I want; friends, food, hanging out. Plus with the added benefit of puppies. But it’s kinda too late to do now, as they are always booked ages in advance (they have two tweens).

I have the prompts all ready to go in my planner - just need to actually start making. I’m hoping I can fill each one this semester. 20 prompts over 4 months sounds doable, yet I always fall short.

Hooray!

I made myself a current Hermione page and then realized others might like to use it, so I made a copy for myself and left the other available. It’s called “Working up Spring Version” and if anyone finds it helpful, feel free to make dupes. It’s after Mistress Jennie’s sheet and before mine if you follow the current homework planner link. (You have to go to the bottom of the page and hit the right arrow to see it.)

Thank you for sharing! I am currently down with norovirus, and not functioning. The help is greatly appreciated.

Oh no! I hope you get back on your feet soon and the others don’t get it at the same time as you! (Or at all, preferably, but I know how these things tend to go…)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Dueling Club
Project Name & Page Link: Quarto Binding
Team: Daily Prophet
Brief Description: I had a vision for how I wanted this book to go, but the actual execution didn’t go quite according to plan. I measured so carefully for the cover boards, hinge, and fore-edge square and somehow it went all wonky when I was gluing it together. It still functions perfectly well, it just doesn’t feel like my best work. And I wish I’d had a darker brown for the spine but it is what it is. From the outside everything looks fine and I know what not to do for next time.
