For the summer in Europe swap we decided that each partner would create a small item that represents summer in their country.
I took the chance to make a beach scene embroidered over a watercolor background. Something I wanted to try for a long time.
What you see here is a Strandkorb, a type of beach chair that crowds every German beach from April to October and is mostly unknown outside of Germany. It’s nice and cozy to sit in and provides some protection from the sun or the wind.
People can rent them for one or several days and a lot of people would spend their whole vacation at the beach that way. It’s not my type of vacation but I can see why they are popular.
I mostly visit the beach in early spring or fall, when it’s less crowded and I can go for long walks or fly kites with my kids.
Onto the details of my hoopla
The first sketch
For the Strandkorb I appliquéd the inside with striped quilting fabric and did a basket weave stitch for the woven part of it and a satin stitch for the wooden part.
Sun, waves and grass. I added a single strand blanket stitch over the lower wave to indicate some sea foam.
Seagulls and cloud.
The back of the embroidery
and the back of the finished hoopla.
The best part of this project was, that I was able to zoom out completely. I would add one detail after the other and had to force myself to finish it and ship it of.
