Pin Event: Reading Rainbow (Yellow…I’ve abandoned full rainbows and am chasing individual colors instead, I know I can’t mix and match)

Prompt: You butter believe it (the top quilt is bound in a buttery yellow)
Team: Veggie Vigilantes
Project Name: Re-binding the couch quilts
Project Link: N/A

Brief Description: We have some lap quilts on the couch that have been well loved over the past two decades. The binding on both was falling to bits, it was shredded and constantly losing pieces. Despite not having any experience with quilting, I took it upon myself to mend them. I picked some coordinating fabrics from my stash, and got to work. I sewed the first yellow binding by machine. The blue quilt was in worse shape, so I hand sewed it. It took ages, but they are both lovely and functional once more.

Book Fair Event Part 1…

Here’s my list of books! I feel like my favorites and perspectives are always shifting, so no guarantees these will be the same if you ask me later. :upside_down_face:

Books I loved in childhood:

Crockett Johnson: Harold and the Purple Crayon - I just loved the very simple illustrations and it always got my imagination going, because Harold is drawing the world around him.

Ezra Jack Keats: The Snowy Day - I remember having this book completely memorized so I could “read” it to other people before I could actually read. Ezra Jack Keats’ illustrations are so captivating.

Gertrude Chandler Warner: The Boxcar Children series - basically all of them, because I loved a good kids’ mystery… but I especially loved The Mystery Behind the Wall where they found an old notebook in between a double wall that sent them on an adventure. I was always obsessed (and maybe still am) with hoping I’d find treasures or mysteries stashed in secret places in the wall, haha!

A.A. Milne: The World of Pooh - I found this thick hardcover edition in my grandparents’ basement when I was pretty young. I ended up keeping it and carrying it around everywhere for a long time, and I loved to read all those old familiar stories and see those original little drawings. I still have this old, tattered book!

Books I’ve loved as an adult:

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: Le Petit Prince - I was somehow never introduced to The Little Prince until college, so I didn’t experience it as a child, and I have never thought of it as a children’s book; rather, a book to remind us to look at the world with childlike wonder, and to be thoughtful with our actions.

Robin Wall Kimmerer: Gathering Moss - Oh my gosh, she is such a magical human who can weave together stories and history snf culture and science. I know that Braiding Sweetgrass is her big popular book, but this book grabbed my heart and inspired me to carry a hand lens everywhere in case I wanted a better look at the tiny things all around us.

Ashley Shew: Against Techo-ableism - I tend to read a lot more non-fiction than fiction, and there have been a whole bunch of new books on disability written by disabled authors in the past several years that are fantastic. If I could only recommend one book on ableism, I think it might be this one, as it is fairly concise but brings up a lot of specific issues and situations that I haven’t heard many others discussing.

hopping back in for my CRAFTLYMPICS event submission!

Prompt: Big Time Project #1

Team: Cheese Trustees

Project Name: Spiffed-up ParaBiathlon Target

Project Link: Colorful Dot Mandala (acrylic on canvas)

Brief Description: I love the biathlon and parabiathlon, and I honestly think the paralympics are a lot more interesting and exciting to watch. In the parabiathlon, the targets are actually smaller than in the traditional olympic event, but they are placed closer to the firing range. One of the adaptations for visually-impaired athletes is a slightly bigger version of the smaller target (that is still oy 21mm in diameter). This target is even a little bit bigger than that, haha.
