Introducing a new feature…

:zap::heart::books: Hermione’s Book Club :books::heart::zap:
In honor of our wonderful new home, I decided it was high time for some new inspiration as well. I have therefor retired the Floo Challenges, and in their place we will have a new feature, Hermione’s Book Club. I invite you all to reread the series with me. During each 2 week interval, we will have a prompt inspired by the current chapter. In addition to the suggested prompt, you may always craft something inspired by a character, scene, or situation in that chapter, provided you note what specifically inspired you in your project submission. You will find each new Book Club prompt at the bottom of Craft Prompts Crescent, above.

House: Slytherin
Brief Description:
Another Stitch-along for me … a wonderful project that will take all fo 2020. It started with a framework pattern in October (but I never started until January), and the designer will release new “chapters” every 2 months through out 2020.

It’s definitely an Advanced Studies Project I will finish!!

Class or Challenge Title: Potions
SPEW: n/a
House: Slytherin
Project Name & Page Link: Cub Scout Core Badges x2
Brief Description: Both twins moved on from Beavers to Cubs in Summer, and were invested before Christmas. So far I have been pushing the task of sewing on the “core badges” (5 each - plus M got her 2 year joining in badge the one session K was ill), but using the Anti-Paralysis Potion session helped me overcome this and overcome the “rut” of procrastinating!

It took me 1.5 hours to sew these core badges on… whoever decided they have to go onto the arm of a jumper really must have had a good laugh! Now onto any Challenge/Activity/Staged badges that may come in soon, knowing my girls. I won’t wait to accumulate them, just sew in badge by badge as they come!!

I’m working on this stitch a long as well! I started at the top instead of the center, but I really like what I have done so far.

Class or Challenge Title: Divination
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Vegan ‘Havarti Cheese’
Brief Description: This recipe has a lot of hidden ingredients! Cashews, agar, coconut oil, etc. It’s the first recipe I’ve tried out of a new vegan cheese cookbook, called One Hour Dairy Free Cheese. There isn’t a link for this specific recipe, but there’s one for their Truffled Brie

Class or Challenge Title: Apparition
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Embroidery Retry
Brief Description:
Hand sewing has always been an issue for me. I tried a few different filler stitches (green thread) and made a mess. Then I switched tracks and tried to sew a very narrow piping/cording around the outline of two flowers. This took forever due to arthritis in my hands but it also encouraged me. The fabric is rather busy with a bold print, and the outlined flowers will be on the outside of a tote bag.

Class or Challenge Title: History of Magic
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Rhubarb Pie
Brief Description:
This tart pie has a delectible pinkness and lots of sugar. I used this recipe https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/9420-straight-up-rhubarb-pie
with this alteration: Instead of sprinkling a teaspoon of sugar on the bottom crust, I used a quarter cup of sugar. The rest of the sugar was not mixed in with the rhubarb but was saved for pouring atop of the mixture once in the pie pan. The crusts were not soggy nor overbaked, and perfect for those with dentures or dental issues as this was easy to chew.

I tried it while still warm from the oven. Here it is, cut and waiting for a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I have the same stitch-along bookmarked  But have not even bought the fabric yet

They have put so much work in to this! I am sure I read that there are over 200 variations on the wand alone!

Class or Challenge Title: Arithmancy
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name & Page Link: HPC journal pages
Brief Description: I love to journal but I really don’t get to do enough of it. One thing I always journal is the HPC. The first picture is the really quite boring journal page I used a few years ago and the other two are for this term. I think it is a much improved, prettier and all round more awesome journal page. I love washi tape, have far too big a box of them, so am also destashing just a little bit as well

@Jeanne I love rhubarb pie, but I have to admit to loving it with quite a lot of sugar  Yours looks so yummy and I love the stitching on the fabric, it makes the stitched areas really pop out

@MistressJennie Cheese is one of the reasons I could never go vegan, as a vegetarian it is a much loved source of protein for me. How did it turn out?

I have to say I am loving our new home’s reply function that allows you to scroll up the responses while you type. Over “there”, in the old place, I always opened the reply in a new window so I could flick between the two!

Copying & pasting my reply to the same question in the Thing-A-Day February Craftalong.

This is the first recipe I’ve tried out of a book called One Hour Dairy Free Cheese, which was written by a woman known for making real cheese, and who runs a company called Urban Cheesecraft. She turned to vegan alternatives when her partner needed to switch to an anti-inflammatory diet.

The cheese I made today was… interesting. It has the flavor profile of havarti down, but the texture was odd. Not as dense as it should be. A bit more spongy. It didn’t cook as the book described it would. It seemed to be nearly ‘set’ well before I added the agar, and once I did, it was very thick, but the book said to cook it for 5 mins. It started to ‘break’ (the oil separate out) after about 2 minutes, so I stopped cooking, and poured it into the molds. I want to try a few more recipes, and see if the same thing happens again. I’m not sure if it’s the agar type I used, or that I used cashew milk yogurt instead of water. (The book stated use either water or vegan yogurt, and since I had some, I used the yogurt.)

She also sells a special quick-set agar, that can be added right into the blender, and not be activated by cooking first, but I used the regular agar powder from amazon.

Note: A day later, and it has firmed up a bit more. Texture is less spongy, but is still softer than havarti. Definitely firmer than cream cheese, but I was able to use a knife to spread it on some crackers with just a little pressure. The book had step by step photos, and the example looked like it was much more liquidy before cooking, than mine was. I’ll report back after trying some more recipes. I’ve got the smoked cheddar, mozzarella, and truffled brie on my list.

One thing I do really like about the book, is right after each cheese recipe, there’s a recipe that includes that cheese. I like that she gives ideas on how to use it.
