Nerd Games - Summer Camp 2025

ADVENTURE CLUB

Find a Cool Leaf or Flower

I had to go to the doctor’s office to pick up the vaccination records for our family, and right outside the doctor’s office is a little farm stand run by a family of homeschoolers. I found a very nice flower there, and I brought it home.

I also saw some very pretty sunflowers on the walk to my daughter’s school.

Visit a body of water of any kind or size

We are very fortunate to live right by Lake Ontario. There’s no comparison to the salty air of the sea, but at least it’s a very large, beautiful body of water. We did not visit it as frequently as we would like this summer, but we were still able to enjoy it a few times.

We got to take a walk by the lake once my husband was up and walking again

And I took my son to skip rocks one day while the girls were at cheerleading practice

And while neither me nor my husband can really dance just yet, we were able to go watch the other swing dancers do their thing by the water. I did have 2 half dances but they totally did me in, so we just watched for the most part.

We saw 2 loons while were there. They were too far away to get a good picture with my phone.

Play a game of any kind

We love games at our place

2 years ago my son and I learned to play chess together using a book called “Chess for Children.” I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning to play.

We play almost every day and he is significantly better than me.

Today’s games ended in 1 win for him and 1 draw.

Prompt: July- Cabin Pride and CAPTURE THE FLAG

Team: Cabin Stargazers

Project Name: Cabin Stargazers Flag

Project Link: n/a

Brief Description: Because I teach science (though, sadly, I no longer get to teach about space), I wanted to feature the Carl Sagan quote about being made of star stuff. I designed it in Microsoft Publisher (kickin’ it relatively old school… no Canva for me!), using a shape, a piece of clipart, and some Word Art. It took me a bit to find a decent (free) image, and to find a font I liked. Then, I colored it after school today, using markers and colored pencils. I was hoping to use watercolors, but I missed the art teacher at the end of the day, and I didn’t want to use any of her supplies without permission. I’ll be hanging it in my classroom!

Team: Cabin Stargazers
Project Name: Camp Flag
Project Link:
Brief Description: This flag has a little of all the things I associate with Camp Nerd Games, and the doodle-y style I’ve been vibing on this season. I went with winging it because I rarely go in with a firm plan, and often (to my detriment), instructions are optional. I’ve gotten better reading them more sometimes, lol.

Project Name: September Postcard Club card
Project Link: N/A
Brief Description: What it was meant to be was a washi-strip covered card with a cutout leaving the “hello” visible. But the big washi piece disintegrated as I tried to transfer it from the waxed paper to the card, so instead I used the intact cutout to cover the hello (repainting the word over top).
Project Photo:

Apparently what happened is that I got so caught up in finishing and sending that I forgot to take a final photo . So please enjoy these process photos (and don’t kick me out of Postcard Club :crossed_fingers:t2: . . .)

CAMPIRE

In the beginning of the season, before all the emergencies went down, my main craft was construction—redoing our basement.

When I’m doing physical work, I like to listen to heavy music. But since the kids are around, when I don’t have my headphones on, I listen to a “clean heavy metal playlist,” in other words, metal with no swearing. Here’s my list so far, and I usually listen on shuffle, so it’s in no particular order. I say “so far” because I add to it as I find new songs that I like listening to while I work.

  • Screaming Eagles by Sabaton
  • Battle Born by Five Finger Death Punch
  • Prayer by Disturbed
  • I Apologize by Five Finger Death Punch
  • I Remember You by Skid Row (this has been my favourite song since high school, and probably will always be )
  • Night Witches by Sabaton
  • Gone Away by Five Finger Death Punch
  • Are you Ready by Disturbed
  • Chains Break by The Sowers (Christian song)
  • Masterpiece by Motionless in White
  • Learning to Survive by We Came as Romans (this was my song when I was driving to the hospital every morning, dealing with a family member who took every opportunity to erode barriers we had previously set… and I was so worn out. The lines “I can feel ‘em watching me while I’m learning to survive/Staring at my broken will that I’m too tired to hide” were particularly relatable)
  • I will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin
  • Voices by Motionless in White
  • Sign of Life by Motionless in White
