Quiltalong - 2026

It will have solid white cornerstones between. I have the strips for the sashing cut, but need to sub-cut those this weekend.

Have you any of the Alice fabric left to fussy cut elements for the corner stones? I normally like white, but this would be so cool with an image

I Edel submit this Seminole pieced bag for the quarterly challenge (and bingo prompt, try a new technique if I’m allowed count it for both)

Seminole piecing is new to me, I followed an awful pattern from a book for this-(molliemakes patchwork) . Abandoned it once I had this panel and winged a pattern for the purse. The fabric was a cyanotype I made yesterday in a workshop. I adore the colour of cyanotype, it’s a different blue from every other blue in my stash (as I discovered when I tried to match it for the strap )

This is the thread with details

Looks great @MistressJennie and @Edel !

I like the pictures in Mollie Makes, and I have a few copies of the magazine (mostly thrift store / gifts) but their patterns are often quite bad. At least you are experienced enough to be able to wing it from a picture - and honestly, I’m sure your bag is way cooler than anything a magazine designer could come up with. I think the blue and orange are a perfect combination.

The Alice faces are pretty big for those corner stones. They are about 4.5" cut really close, and more like 8" if you allow for the frame around her.

But… This did make me think. I have been left with random bits when fussy cutting the big centers, and have been cutting those down to 2.5" squares when possible. I do have a few 2.5" butterflies, and birds. I wonder if I could come up with a few more from other prints… I’ll have a looksee later.

And I LOVE you bag! I’m sorry the pattern stunk, but you did wonders with it.

This is what it might looks like with different corner stones. I’m not sure what I think… The white might make things pop more. But it is fun… Opinions everyone???

Overall, I’m loving this quilt, but I feel like those cornerstones make everything too busy. I vote for white or less busy colors.

I love it. It has the Alice chaos going on. The white would definitely be calmer.

I think the stars would be more of the focus with white instead of the patterned pieces. It is lovely.

I vote for white corner stones. The stripes draw the eye along the sashing and away from the blocks. The white will break it up nicely. It is a charming quilt, love the colors and theme.

Is there an August prompt?

Yes.
August Prompt:
K, G, E

All of the prompts, challenges, and BOM info can be found in the very top posts of this thread (thank you @MistressJennie for helping me out with that earlier this month!). Also, everyone may already know this, but if you click on the words Quiltalong - 2026 at the top of the page, it will take you to the top of the thread.

Thank you! I swear I read before I posted, saw the July, but not August. But it was also very late.

So, after announcing that we would have Bingo calls starting on Mondays, I forgot to add a Monday Bingo alarm to my phone and missed the Monday Bingo call…then I got busy and missed the Wednesday Bingo call as well :woman_facepalming:. I added the two missed calls to our September schedule and from here on out, we will have Bingo calls every Monday and Wednesday through of the quarter. Okay, I just added Monday to my Wednesday Bingo alarms.

Today’s Bingo prompt is:
Use 2.5” squares

Ever since getting back to the house at the end of summer break, I’ve felt a bit frazzled and unfocused. I had to take care of some stuff with LittleBookLover’s school and that was definitely taking up some headspace, but I sent off an email dealing with that earlier today, so that has been taken care of. Next, I need to clean up the house. It is an absolute explosion and I’ve found that when the house is messy and cluttered, my head feels cluttered and I have much more difficulty focusing. My birthday is coming up later this week, so as a birthday gift to myself, I am going to work on really getting things picked up so I can craft in a much more relaxing atmosphere on my birthday!

I have not worked on the second quarter prize packs at all since we’ve gotten back to the house. I feel bad because I really wanted to have them out right after the end of the quarter, yet here we are two months into the next quarter. I am sorry that they haven’t gone out yet. I am planning on working on them next week.

@marionberries, thank you for posting all the BOMs you’ve completed so far this year, I really enjoyed seeing them altogether!

@Edel, that fabric dyeing workshop sounded amazing! Your bag came out great!

@MistressJennie, I’m looking forward to seeing which direction you ended up going with your Alice quilt!

Honestly, I’m surprised you manage to do so much already, running everything in the Quiltalong, on top of taking care of LittleBookLover and doing your own crafting. So I don’t blame you for not finding the time to work on prize packs in the middle of summer!

I had hoped to do more quilting this summer too, but I had some unexpected fatigue to deal with. I’m feeling much more energetic now and I received the first scrap swap envelopes today too. So, time for new projects!

My Friend, please know that while we all think your prize packs are amazing, no one expects you to make everyone elaborate gifts 4 times a year. Please don’t feel like you need to put this pressure on yourself. Just craft what you want, when you want, or you will find yourself so burned out, you won’t be able to continue. (Ask me how I know, after running a very busy Craftalong for over 12 years.) Take care of you and LittleAudiobookLover.

I absolutely hear you on needing the house to be clean, so that you can craft without the mess and clutter clogging your brain, and stifling creativity. I’m the same way. If everything is chaos around me, I cannot create beautiful things. Over the years I have created systems for myself, to keep myself on task, and keep chores going on a specific schedule, so I can’t get so behind that things snowball into too much chaos. (Though I’m fairly certain Ada might be a demi-goddess of Chaos, sent to be my nemesis.) For example, today is Tuesday, so that means Kitchen Deep(ish) Clean and Mopping Tile Floors, on top of the regular daily tasks like make the bed, empty the dishwasher, etc. Tomorrow is Wednesday, aka first half of Laundry Day(s), which gets completed on Thursday. This Friday sees the advent of tackling the downstairs bathrooms, which is alternated with next Friday’s task of dusting and wet mopping the hardood floors.

Some weeks I’m able to get the full Deep Clean done in the kitchen (clean & polish counters, floors, wipe down appliances, clean the kettle, wipe down table, clean & disinfect the sink). Some weeks I barely manage the floors and counters, and I have to move on. Others I’m a bit ahead, and get the counters done the night before, so that in the morning I can tackle things that got neglected previously, like cleaning the kettle, so my tea will keep tasting great. All this is a bonkers way to say: Do what works for you.

I marionberries, submit this as my late July BOM entry.

This one came out a bit busy for my tastes, but it will work in with the rest just fine. I did order the lime green flannel as it was a color I was missing in my lucky flannel stash. I am starting on the other colorway today.

@Immaculata and @MistressJennie I feel your struggles of keeping up the house/yard, keeping kids alive and entertained, and crafting. I am retired now and it is just myself and my DW. And I still will craft or garden rather than do dishes. Luckily my DIL and GD were dropping by so we got the house spiffed up. Summer is more about outdoor stuff, camping, gardening and the house gets ignored until someone is going to visit. We really need a visitor every two weeks or so. Want to come visit?

A few years ago, there was an excerpt from a 1949 sewing manual that was going around, with people flipping out about how sexist it is. Part of it told you to make sure the dishes were done, and the house was clean, in case unexpected visitors came to call. Part of it was about how to put on a clean dress, and put on makeup before sewing, so that if you tried on the item you were sewing, you could get an idea of how it would look on you, at your best.

It’s clearly written for a different time, and a lot of different expectations on women. And it is sexist. But there’s like a tiny thread of it, that I totally get. If the dishes are done, and dinner is in the crockpot early in the day, then I feel mentally, so much lighter. Like I have the freedom to work on my project without worry or interruption. And while you can’t pay me to wear makeup, I do feel better (and therefore in a better headspace, and more productive) when I get dressed in an outfit that makes me feel good for the day. I have this older dress that is so soft, and get’s paired with comfy leggings, but also looks nice on me. I don’t keep it for special occasions, because it’s not that nice. It just makes me feel great when I wear it; like I could kick quilting ass, and look cute while doing it.

I think because it’s another time we can interpret that through our own lens and in that case I love it. Yes, I want my house to be clean and dinner to be in the oven before I sew so that all I have to do is focus on sewing. I know that things are tidy and I will be fed when I get hungry, no distractions, yay! I also like the idea of looking good because yes, you will get a better perspective of how a frock is gonna look on you when it’s done, that is good advice. So long as it’s all about & for you, not anybody else’s expectations.

I find it funny because I’m usually sewing in my PJs. Why get dressed to get changed and changed again every time I need to try it on. The main difference would be to put a good bra on to try on the clothes. Food would potentially be neglected here, but there’s only me, I can correct that later!

Yes, it’s sexist. But in 1949, those were the beliefs of the people. We can’t change that, but we can recognise the moves forward and where they are still lacking and then address those where we can.

“looking attractive is a very important part of sewing” … Have they seen the faces I (we) pull when things are being a PITA. That is not attractive
