WELCOME TO THE ALL NEW, REIMAGINED, HARRY POTTER CRAFTALONG - SUMMER QUIDDITCH EDITION!

The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired.

If you have been curious about us in the past, but worried about joining such a long-running Craftalong, NOW is the perfect time to join in. The Craftalong has been reimagined, and is going in new direction. Each session we will have prompts inspired by the Wizarding World, Molly’s Housecraft Challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & the occasional Minister of Magic Mission. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans for your Team. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much as you like.

Each regular project is worth 10 Bertie Bott’s Beans for your Team. LC Challenge entries, items for LC Swaps, or charity creations, will all earn you 10 Bonus Beans! And Minister for Magic Missions earn a whopping 30 Beans! At the end of each term, we will take an average of each Team’s total, and declare a winning Team!

This shorter SUMMER TERM is inspired by the the most popular game in the Wizarding World, QUIDDITCH!

To participate, first choose a team. Then read through the prompts below, create a craft to fit the challenge, and post it here. If your project doesn’t fit any prompts, or if you’ve already fulfilled a prompt it fits, simply label it as Crafter’s Choice #1, #2, etc. (You may submit Crafter’s Choice as many times up to 10 times.) That’s all there is to it!

Prompts:
:sunrise: Preseason Training - Get ready for an excellent Quidditch season by getting in plenty of practice. Please craft something you’ve done before, and will do again. Make a few of your favorite mindless dish cloths, or whip up some master boards for future projects.

:goal_net: Keeper - Sometimes we guard our stash too closely. Please either ‘use the good stuff’, and craft with a precious item you’ve been hoarding, OR find a way to craft with a non-precious supply that’s been in your stash way too long.

:sparkles: Chaser - Chasers work in groups of 3. Please craft 3 of something; 3 scrunchies, 3 bracelets, etc. Alternatively you can craft with 3 of a particular supply; three colors of fabric in a quilt, 3 strands of yarn held together in a basket, etc.

:two_men_holding_hands: Beater - Two beaters work as a pair, to keep the rest of the team safe. Craft a pair of something, such as a pair of earrings or set of potholders. Or you may craft 2 things that compliment one another perfectly, like a cookie-mix-in-a-jar & a decorated wooden spoon, or a reading shawl & bookmark.

:handshake: Teamwork - All great Quidditch players know that they are only as good as their team. Please celebrate the magic of teamwork by creating a project with another person, or a group of people. Put together a quilt made of blocks from friends in your Guild, or work with your family members to fix up a space in (or outside) your home. Please give before and after pictures.

:eyes: Seeker - Seek out something new! A new pattern to try, a new fabric line from a favorite designer, a completely new medium, a new technique in a medium you already love, etc.

:seven: Seven - Seven has long been seen as a magical number in mythology, science and mathematics, so it is no surprise that each Quiddich team consists of 7 members. Share with us a project that uses this magical number in some way, such as using 7 shades of the rainbow, or 7 different materials.

:cricket_bat_and_ball: Beater Bats - Craft something that uses wood as a material, or that uses a wooden tool in its construction, such as a bracelet of wooden beads, or use a wooden spoon to stir cookie dough. Alternately, you may beat back your stash, by crafting a project that uses at least 75% stash materials.

:red_circle: Quaffle - The Quaffle is a red leather ball, with indentations for the players to grip. Please get to grips with a WIP that has been lingering around your space. The quilt you cut out the pieces for, but never put together, the mending that has been piling up, etc. Alternately you may craft something red, or something out of leather (or faux leather!).

:warning: Bludger - A bludger is a round ball, that flies at all players, attempting to knock them off their brooms. Please create something round, or something which uses a round supply. Alternatively you may ‘knock something off’ your To Do list.

:yellow_circle: Snitch - The snidget is a small magical bird, with erratic flight patterns, once hunted by Wizards. This eventually led to the creation of the Golden Snitch, and the legal protection of the birds. Please craft something inspired by birds or feathers, something which hangs in the air, or something with erratic changes, such as random color changes or zig-zagging patterns.

:broom: Broom - Broomsticks have long been associated with women and domesticity, but gained the association with Witches and flight by the 1400’s. Please craft something for your home, or for a special woman in your life. Alternately you may craft something to take ‘on the go’.

:dizzy: Goal Hoops - Craft something that is, or represents, a personal goal for yourself. If you’ve long wanted to learn to quilt, take this opportunity! If your goal is to get back into yoga, craft yourself a yoga-mat bag.

:trophy: Quidditch Cup - A cup or trophy is a symbol of the winning team’s victory and a reward for their hard work. Reward yourself in some way, for all your hard work learning your craft(s) over the years. Now that you’re a great knitter, buy the fancy yarn you’ve had your eye on, and make yourself a sweater. Decide that you deserve a dedicated craft space, and set yourself up a desk or cart to create from.

:yarn: Crafter’s Choice - If you have a project that doesn’t fit any of the prompts, or you have already fulfilled the prompt it fits, you may still post it as “Crafter’s Choice” for 10 Beans. You may submit as many projects as you wish under this option. When using this option, please number your Crafter’s Choice posts to help keep it clear when tracking points. (Ie: Crafter’s Choice #1, Crafter’s Choice #2)

:basket: :woman_mage: :shallow_pan_of_food: Molly’s Housecraft Challenges :yarn: :woman_mage: :mantelpiece_clock:
:yarn: Scrap Busting: Channel your inner Molly and craft something solely from scraps or stash.
:thread: WIP Challenge: The work of a mum of 7 never seems to end. Please complete a Work In Progress.
:screwdriver: Reparo: Channel your inner Arthur and repair something, alter something, or organize something.

:sparkles: :scroll: :sparkles: Minister for Magic Missions
Current Mission: June 10 - August 31

Dear Magical Friends,
Supporting local teams can be a wonderful way to foster a sense of community between neighbors. In a secret group like the Wizarding World, attending matches and supporting local Quidditch teams can give us a space to be open about who we are. But if taken too far, it can create an ‘us vs them’ mentality, rather than seeing ourselves as part of an even larger community.

In the Muggle World some people don’t always feel safe to be themselves, and therefore June is celebrated as Pride Month in the LGBTQ+ community. For this challenge, please celebrate who you are, by crafting something in your signature style. Alternately you may craft something to celebrate Pride Month, or you may create something inspired by a style, technique, or cuisine of another world culture.

Sincerely,
Minister for Magic
Hermione Granger-Weasley

To keep it interesting, I plan on using 4 different world teams next summer. Just to get us out of our groups, and mixing with new friends. Though I do plan to keep the 4 Periodicals as teams for the Fall/Winter term, so people can develop team spirit as well.

A little background on each of our teams for the summer…

:bird: Fitchberg Finches :bird: :purple_heart: :bird:
Hometown: Fitchberg, Massachussetts, USA
Team Colors: Purple & Grey
One of the oldest Quidditch Teams in North America, the Finches have won the American League Championship seven times.

:sunny: Sumbawanga Sunrays :sunny: :blue_heart: :sunny:
Hometown: Sumbawanga, Rukwa, Tanzania
Team Colors: Yellow & Blue
This East-African team is known for delighting crowds with their formation looping.

:cloud_with_lightning: Thundelarra Thunderers :cloud_with_lightning: :orange_heart: :cloud_with_lightning:
Hometown: Thundelarra, Western Australia, Australia
Team Colors: Grey & Orange
The Thunderer’s rivalry with the Wollongong Warriors was legendary. A common response to an unlikely claim or boast was “Yeah, and I think I’ll volunteer to ref the next Thunderer-Warrior game.”

:japanese_ogre: Toyohashi Tengu :japanese_ogre: :black_heart: :japanese_ogre:
Hometown: Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan
Team Colors: Red & Black
This Japanese team is known for practicing rigorously over turbulent seas, in stormy conditions, on a small volcanic island, off the south coast of Japan’s archipelago.

Please note, some of this comes from the Harry Potter Wikia, and some I just made up. Please don’t come for me in an angry mob if I got something wrong. It’s just for fun.

I am really enjoying stitching out pre-printed sashiko blocks and panels. I have a cute little kit that I keep out so when I have a few minutes or we are watching a movie I get some stitching in. I have quite a few more ahead of me to do, and I’m loving it, but I feel like I should get onto some other crafts too :stuck_out_tongue:
This was my first time using a colour other than neutral for my sashiko, and I really liked it!
The colours in the angled photo are more true to life.
