ALL NEW Harry Potter Craftalong - Autumn 2024

Prompt/Challenge Title: Harry’s Bedroom
Project Name & Page Link: Christmas Carol Ornament
Team: Daily Prophet
Brief Description: I printed and bound a tiny copy of Dicken’s Christmas Carol (about 2 1/4 by 3 3/4 inches) using a file of the text formatted by someone else.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Borgin & Burke’s
Project Name & Page Link: Ollie Hood for DS1
Team: The Daily Prophet
Brief Description: Knitting with nearly-black yarn is a labor of love. It was worth the effort, though, to make this super-soft hood to keep the boy-child warm should he have to brave the outdoors during a Michigan winter. (bottom hood in picture)

Prompt/Challenge Title: The Herbology Greenhouses
Project Name & Page Link: Ollie Hood for DS2
Team: The Daily Prophet
Brief Description: When you have kids, you usually end up making multiples of everything. So, I give you a second dark grey Ollie Hood! It’s the top one in the above picture, and slightly smaller than his older brother’s.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Borgin & Burke’s
Project Name & Page Link: Plastic Bag Holder
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: I used black & dark purple fabric to make a plastic bag holder!

(I printed the pattern off a while ago & don’t remember where it’s from)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice #4
Project Name & Page Link: Christmas Bracelet
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: I tried something new & made a christmas friendship bracelet with magnetic clasps instead of ties. It turned out pretty well!

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice #5
Project Name & Page Link: Cat Bookmarks
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: These were inspired by some bookmarks I found online (maybe on pinterest?). First I made a template kitty and traced & cut out at least one for each color of cardstock I had. The blue one with straight arms was made first, then I tried making them with curled up arms & liked it enough that the rest have them too.

(green kitties arms are a little wonky, so I wrapped them around the rest)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice #6
Project Name & Page Link: Tiny Flowers in Blue Vase
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: These tiny flowers were made with embroidery floss, yellow beads, and floral wire. The flowers were made by modifying this pattern (Ravelry link).

(the vase is from STS)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice #7
Project Name & Page Link: Flower Bouquet
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: Last year, my grandma gave me a bunch of her yarn and I finally made her some flowers to thank her. I wrapped the vase in an embroidery floss braid (with an extra flower from testing tiny flowers (Ravelry link)) and added a chain of blue variegated yarn in the bottom.

Better view of the flowers before I wrapped the stems with floral tape:

(patterns: Daisies (youtube link), Daffodils, Tulips, Lily)

Prompt/Challenge Title: DADA Classroom
Project Name & Page Link: Brown Basket
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: I modified my usual basket pattern to use a basketweave pattern and made a small basket to help organize things on my desk.

(pattern)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Quidditch Pitch
Project Name & Page Link: Cat Project Bag
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: I used an online tutorial to make a project bag with cute cat fabric!

Prompt/Challenge Title: The Whomping Willow
Project Name & Page Link: Wooden Semi Model
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: This model was fun to put together, but parts of it were a struggle! Sometimes parts wouldn’t fit together quite right & I’d have to carefully sand pieces a tiny bit at a time until they fit. Some of the flexible pieces broke when I bent them (even though they needed to be bent!), so they had to be glued back together with wood glue. One piece broke on one side & when I went to put it together, the other side broke.

(with bonus kitty from a different kit)

Prompt/Challenge Title: The Sky
Project Name & Page Link: Honey Cowl
Team: Which Broomstick
Brief Description: This cowl is both cerulean blue (ish) and fluffy. It was made with an oddball skein of hand dyed “alpaca/sheep wool” that I got at the thrift, as a way to test out my new Addiclick needles. The pattern is a free one from Madelinetosh: link.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Transfiguration Classroom
Project Name & Page Link: First Gluebook
Team: Which Broomstick
Brief Description: So much washi tape was used in the course of this gluebook!

That cowl looks so cozy, @fishstix43!

Prompt/Challenge Title: The Sky
Project Name & Page Link: Mohair Musselburgh Hat
Team: The Daily Prophet
Brief Description: This Musselburgh hat was knit with sock yarn and kid mohair and it is so fluffy and warm! It’s like wearing a cozy cloud on your head, minus the wet. Bonus: it even looks like a gloomy, winter sky.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Molly’s Housecraft Challenge: WIP Challenge
Project Name & Page Link: Baby Humpback Whale
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: I started this whale last year, then set it aside for a few months to work on holiday projects. The top and bottom were crocheted and I still had to make the fins and sew everything together. I finally picked it back up and finished it!

Prompt/Challenge Title: King’s Cross
Project Name: Nami Strong World To Commission
Team: The Quibbler
Brief Description: Someone commissioned me to make a top for their Smart Doll. There were a few obstacles to overcome. 1) I had no pattern and had to make one 2) I don’t have a doll with the same size bust they do (an aftermarket large size from another company) and 3) they weren’t able to provide the bust circumference measurement for me :stuck_out_tongue: I realized right off this would not really be a profitable situation for me in terms of time spent and having to buy the yarn, but it was a good experience for me since I’m terrified of commissions and now I have a working patt should I decide to make more. Someone on a doll forum was able to provide the circumference for me, so yay! The top is one that Nami from One Piece wears in Strong World.

Here’s what it looks like padded out to the 27 cm of the aftermarket bust (square on my girl cuz I had to use folded fun foam, lol!)

Some 2024 projects to catch up on…

Prompt/Challenge Title: Hagrid’s Cabin
Project Name & Page Link: Grandma’s Dishcloths Batch #1
Team: Daily Prophet
Brief Description: We had a death in the family in December, and I needed a mindless knitting project to get me through. My mother’s best friend spent hours sitting with me during this time and since I don’t actually use knitted dishcloths much I gave her the finished items.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Flooded Corridor
Project Name & Page Link: Grandma’s Dishcloths Batch #2
Team: Daily Prophet
Brief Description: I’m going to stretch this prompt to its breaking point and say that this particular dishcloth pattern has mirrored symmetry. Close enough, maybe?

Prompt/Challenge Title: Whomping Willow
Project Name & Page Link: Out with the Old, In with the New Year Orange Banana Bread
LC Contest Great Lettuce Craft Bake Off 2024
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description: In the week after Christmas, I had so many leftovers to use up that I felt like it was my full time job to creatively “use up all the stuff”. I made stew out of leftover prime rib and veggies, lunch out of random frozen appetizers, toddler breakfasts from fruit salad and leftover quiche. Honestly, it was a slog. I was down to just two leftovers: 5 brown bananas and a 1/4 bottle of orange juice, which none of us drink. I googled around to find a banana bread recipe that included juice. And guess what? That exists! I made a double batch, which made 12 muffins, and 2 loaves. It was quite tasty, and I’ll definitely make the recipe again.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Quidditch Pitch
Project Name & Page Link: Sapphire Quilted Pillow
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description:
In teaching myself to do Foundation Paper Piecing over the last few months, I watched a TON of how-to videos, including some from Karen Brown, and Jen Ofenstein of Fandom in Stitches. This was my final result, after making a small HP block, a heart jewel block, and this round jewel block twice! A pillow for my parents.

Prompt/Challenge Title: History of Magic Classroom
Project Name & Page Link: Rose Garden Throw Pillow
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description:
When I was a kid I loved the story of The Secret Garden. The idea that there was a magic place, even within the home we thought we knew. All the colors in this pillow (and the rose garden theme of the prints) remind me of this story.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Housecraft - Reparo
Project Name & Page Link: Reorganized my Pantry & Household Essentials Cabinets
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description: The holidays were rough on my home. I’m normally a pretty organized person, but with the influx of visitors (& things they brought with them), and lots of leftovers, things in the pantry had gotten messy. Going through everything, I was able to pull out partial packages of things, so I could use them up soon, and update my ongoing written inventory that I use when meal planning.
Before:

After:

I’d normally keep my stash of cleaning items in the pantry, (dishwasher detergent, liquid hand soap refills). But with a toddler in the house, I actually keep those in upper cabinets in the laundry room, where Ada can’t reach. Meanwhile, I often get offers from Target for a gift card when I spend a certain amount on household essentials, and I put the gift cards aside throughout the year to use at Christmas (it helps me afford to buy gifts for a child on our YMCA’s Angel Tree). Somehow over the year, various items had been bought, and put into a few different cupboards in there, so I had more of some items than I thought between different cupboards, and I was completely out of others. I reorganized both of these cabinets so all of like-items are together. (Sadly, only remembered to get a pic of one of them, and no before pics.)

Prompt/Challenge Title: Housecraft - WIP
Project Name & Page Link: Scrappy Green Crochet Basket
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description: This project has been in-progress since the spring or summer, when I started it on a Zoom call with LC friends. I thought my dad would like the colors, so I finished it for him for Christmas.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice # 1
Project Name & Page Link: Friendship Soup Mixes & Ranch Oyster Crackers

Brief Description:
I made 12 jars of this soup mix, to give to friends and neighbors this year. I did a triple batch of the oyster crackers, and packed them in some candy treat bags to go with the soups.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Crafter’s Choice # 2
Project Name & Page Link: Holiday (Australian) Rocky Road
Team: Witch Weekly
Brief Description:
This recipe was part of Cookie Week at New York Times Cooking this year. It looked so good, I had to make it. It was even prettier up close, but I forgot to get a detailed picture before I gave it away to friends. I used the Biscoff spread (you can use any spread/nut butter), Speculoos cookies, marshmallows, pecans, caramel flavored chips, and red, white & gold sprinkles on top.
