Can’t remember if it’s been done, and I can’t run one myself at the moment, but I just saw a craft made from “trash” and it made me think a fun gallery to peruse would be one from a “Trash to Treasure” themed swap where all the crafts are made strictly from discarded items/trash/recycle bin finds.

Would love a swap like that

Oooohhhh, I would love this swap! I love upcycled crafts. I have a few that I posted here.
This one has a tutorial on how to make a mini journal out of old cassette tapes.
I love to do upcycle projects, giving old retro materials a new purpose. Here is a mini notebook I made a few years back using an old cassette tape and some fabric to decorate.

Step 1. Carefully take the cassette tape apart. Older ones have little screws, but you can easily pry one open with a flat head screw driver at the seams.

Step 2. Take a cassette single sleeve and use it as a template to cut another piece of cardboard. You …

I make miniatures out of trash ALL the time! I’d be interested!
Plates made from baked goods packaging.
Blender made from an eraser and a pen cap. Mixer from toothbrush handle and bowl from packaging from a gumball machine toy.
Perfume bottles from bits salvaged from a motherboard. And in an Altoids tin.
Tonic bottles from drinking straws. Test tubes from Capri Sun drinking straws. Bottles from motherboard parts.
Mini Altoids tin. More motherboard bottles. Cauldron from a pencil top eraser. Bits of string dipped in nail polish for lavender.

Love it! I bought a wooden vintage dollhouse and still needs to renovate it. These would look awesome! I’m guessing you have one. I would love to see photos of the house.

I actually don’t have a house yet! I have a room box, though. It was made as fan art for the book Dr. Potter’s Medicine Show by Eric Scott Fischl. He is The Mistress T’s husband.
Here is a link for the post I made on here about it: The Laboratory of the Nefarious Dr. Hedwith

Anyone up for hosting? I just started a new job and am not sure I’d be able to stay on top of things if I hosted. (Might be willing if no one else is able to step in. Really want this one to happen!)
Tagging a couple of expert hosts who showed interest in the idea… @Tapestry @Bunny1kenobi

I can definitley do that. I’ll add to see if anyone is willing to ship overseas. Ohhhh, I’m getting excited! I will start the sign ups soon. Hoping more will see this and show interest. My first swap I hosted only had 4 participants and it was perfect for my first time. Maybe in about 2 weeks, I can start the sign ups.

Here are a few ideas I took from other artists on this board:

I’ve been meaning to try this technique for quite a while, and have been collecting broken jewelry and cheap jewelry from garage sales with that goal in mind.
For some reason, I decided I needed to sew all the jewelry in place instead of gluing it. It made the process 10x longer & harder! Still, it was fun and I’ll likely try it again sometime.
I tried to stick mostly to gold metals & thread, to better coordinate with the frame, which was a hand-me-down. Accented with mainly reds …
My swap partner finally received this and I have been eagerly wanting to share this to the general threads. It was originally for a favorite tea swap, but I ran out of time and used it for the other swap I signed up for at the same time. Thankfully, the other swap required you to finish the craft prior to signing up.
Anyway, I was glad to be able to use it for this one and first time I have tried this. Glad it turned out ok. Tutorial link below. I made some changes to my liking and didn’t exact…
I am a little rusty with the posting here so bear with me.
I was doing a challenge where the topic was bird houses. I always break the rulz so I went on a train thought and ended up with Smokey the Bear saving birds houses by stopping forest fires. [IMG_20240113_193948772-EDIT]
The image was printed on fabric with an inkjet printer then heat set. I added a braided sisal frame because… well because why not?

The collar got a bit of miniature pom pom trim. Because…
Remade a sweater from the thrift shop into a few things (fingerless mitts, a vest and two stocking Christmas ornaments). There are a couple scraps left that would make sweet lavender sachets for the spring, too. The original sweater felt too claustrophobic with the tightness and wool.

sleeves and I had a lot of fun choosing what to do with it!
I love books. And I love making things with upcycled fabric. Then I had a brilliant thought: why not combine the two? And thus this book bag was created!
Made entirely of upcycled fabrics and ribbon, some markers and beads for the little spider, “Harry”, this bag which I named “The Eliza” is meant for bookworms…and cottagecore lovers. The little spider web is made from cheesecloth and the handles were created from recycled fabric I braided together.

I’ve been getting super annoyed at how much packaging we end up throwing away, just from food and necessities, so this week, I decided to take part of a box to make a couple little paper dolls.

First was this orange cat.

I just freehanded the body parts in weird abstract shapes, painted them in with some gesso, and then colored with gouache and drew on some details with a dip pen and India ink. (Sorry I didn’t get many in-progress photos)

Must find a purpose for 5 discarded pairs of husband’s work pants. New, these pants are black with black stitching, now they are grey and grey. Turn them inside out and they are black with bright white stitching. I used the bottom of the legs for the bag then cut off the inside seams to add contrast to the handles. I removed the waist band then cut and repositioned so the brand logo button and original buttonhole could be used to close the bag. I replaced black stitching with bright white thread…
There are numerous upcycled projects here and I just searched the key word “upcycled” and listed a few.

I am planning a sign up date of Aug 1 - 15 and send out Sept. 19. Hoping to get more interest before the sign up date, but a small swap is fine with me too. Are those going to work for everyone here? Nothing set in stone, I am open to pushing it back if people need more time.
