Harry Potter Craftalong - Ostara 2023

~ Harry Potter Craftalong ~
~ February 1 - May 31 2023 ~

Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired . Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each House’s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. That’s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe , or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermione’s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your username. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

:alembic: Alchemy: This term we are going to start looking at Indian Alchemy. The 2nd millennium BC text Vedas describes a connection between eternal life and gold. Craft something that includes some golden element, either the metal or the colour.

:mage: Apparition: In this class we explore disappearing and reappearing. This term please craft an idea that you once had that disappeared but now is finally reappearing again. Maybe it was an idea you had but because of time, energy or money you weren’t able to do anything about it and you forgot or put it to the side, maybe the idea will finally reappear this term.

:infinity: Arithmancy: We are delving into Numerology. Use the numbers in your birthdate to determine your craft for this class! Use the numbers individually or use a combination of mathematical operations to come up with a number that relates to your craft. Ex: Hermione Grainger born 19 September, 1979 would be 19, 8, and 1979. She might add 1+ 9 + 8 (18) and add 1+9+7+9 (26) to total 44, then turn to page 44 of her knitting book and make the pattern seen there. Or she might choose 19 and 8 and perform the operations 9-8=1 /1 = 1 then combine with 1979 in the following way: 9-9=0x7=0+1=1 and combine that 1 with the other 1 to get 2. From here she decides to make a pair of mittens or a set of 2 coasters. You do not have to give your birthdate. You can simply list the answer you arrived at and how it relates to your craft.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: For this term you are to choose one constellation and craft something inspired by it. You can be as literal or loose as you like, as long as you can explain how the constellation is reflected in your project.

:unicorn: : Care of Magical Creatures: This term we are studying the Hebridean Black , a species native to the Hebrides Islands of Scotland, which has black skin, with rough scales and brilliant purple eyes. Craft something that is inspired by Scotland – think tartan, the national emblem of the thistle or one of the legends.

:sparkles: Charms: This term we are working on the permanent sticking charm . Muggles who don’t have the advantage of this charm have to use glue (which was historically made from horses) and a curious little metal device called a ‘stable’. The two may be connected. For homework explore how the Muggles stick things together, this can be with glue, stables, or sewing items together.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): We are exploring some curious creatures this semester, including flesh eating slugs. As Hagrid can tell you, they destroy vegetable patches, but they also have a corrosive effect on the skin. Create something that has in one of it’s stages the use of a slimy ingredient, or something that is grey or something that covers the skin.

:crystal_ball: Divination: This term we will be covering the practice of lithomancy, or the art of divining using stones. Typically one uses a set of thirteen stones each representing a different concept, such as fortune, luck, news and the astrological planets. One will then toss the stones on a board and interpret the pattern in which they fall. To demonstrate your mastery of this subject create a project using stone or stones as one of your materials. Alternatively, you may also create something representing the number 13 (13 ingredients, 13 components, 13 sides etc).

:broom: Flying: It’s important to keep your broom in good condition. Luckily a Broomstick Servicing Kit contains all the tools needed. For this term please craft something using a kit, or follow a tutorial or recipe that lists all the needed tools/materials/ingredients.

:herb: Herbology: This term we will be reviewing One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi in its entirety! There’s a wealth of information in this text. To show your understanding, please complete one of the following options. 1) Create something that uses a lot of ingredients. Examples would be beading, quilting, or anything with a variety of elements or pieces used in its creation. 2) Create something that you need to study or use your text for. Examples would be something you have to learn new things to make, or something for which you need to consult a pattern or recipe.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM): Almeric Sawbridge defeated the largest river troll in Britain, who was threatening people attempting to cross the river. Trolls are generally aggressive creatures with low intelligence. For this term craft something that calms you down, or hypes you up. Or that doesn’t require a lot of brain power to complete, like how some people can knit without even looking down. Alternatively you could craft something inspired by a troll or a bridge.

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: For this term you are to go to a public, Muggle-centric location and observe Muggles interacting together and with their environment. Afterwards, craft something inspired by your observations. Be sure to cite your field notes in your homework submission to show what the observations were which inspired your crafting choices.

:test_tube: Potions: This term we are working on the Alihotsy Draught. Drinking this or inhaling its fumes causes uncontrollable laughter. This is a blue potion that produces blue fumes. For this class, you have options: 1) Create something that brings you great joy 2) create something blue or something that has blue in it 3) create something that has noticeable fumes such as soap, potpourri, or a delicious food 4) create something using a medium that gives off fumes, being sure to wear proper protection!

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes This term we are studying the ancient Irish script Ogham, (Oh-am, the ‘g’ is silent). This script was incised on stone and it’s comprised of straight lines. For homework work with sand, stone, or the colour grey. Alternately create something that involves a lot of straight lines, or something inspired by Ireland.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: Untransfiguration is the art of reversing a previous transfiguration. For this term craft something where you undo a previous project. This can be a project that worked out but you no longer need it, or a failed project you’re undoing so you can use the parts for a new project. For instant an old painting on the canvas can be painted over, or the failed and dry cake can be turned into cake pops.

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.
:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

May - Street food : It’s easy, quick and hopefully tasty, even if you’ve not had the chance to try out street food from a food truck. I’m adding a link to the typical street food you find around the world from wikipedia, but for this challenge you can make other street food you know of.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Chapter 8: The Quidditch World Cup May 1-31
In the top box at the World Cup stadium, Harry meets Winky the House Elf, a friend of Dobby’s, who is saving a seat for her owner, Mr. Crouch (who never shows up). The Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, and the Malfoys are also present. Bagman introduces both team’s mascots, Leprechauns for Ireland, and Veela for Bulgaria. The match is intense, with both teams displaying great skill, particularly Victor Krum. A fight breaks out between the mascots. Ireland gains a large lead and wins the match, despite Krum catching the Snitch. Fred & George are thrilled about winning their bet with Ludo Bagman. For this challenge, please share with us a craft you are thrilled with the outcome of.

:mortar_board:~ Advanced Studies ~:mortar_board:

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being said…
  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note, after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name: Cottage Core Anniversary Quilt
House: Slytherin
Brief Description: This project will be an anniversary gift for my MIL and FIL, who were married in June, almost 61 years ago. I received two lovely charm packs in the quilt-along challenges, along with a pattern book to make use of them. I picked up a couple fabrics to coordinate with the charms and to back the quilt. The combination has a very cottage core aesthetic - lots of cool, muted colors and classic prints and patterns. I’m hoping to make it a reasonably sized throw for the living room of their lake house.

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name: Starry Batik Quilt
House: Slytherin
Brief Description: My hoard of quilting batks has reached a point that I can definitely do something about it. I picked up a wonderful book of scrappy quilt patterns on the recommendation of @Magpie , and plan to make one of the starry quilts. It’s very likely that both the front and back of this quilt will be pieced since I certainly have enough fabric for it and I seem to have an aversion to making anything easy on myself…at least when it comes to quilts.

@tendstowardschaos - awesome projects! I’ve added them to the log!

Every year, I like to clean out old Advanced Studies Proposals. This year, we are clearing out 2019. If anyone would like to extend the projects below, let me know by this time next week! Otherwise, these will be removed from the record.

@madcrafter madcrafter: Charms, February 22, 2019

@jellybean jellybean: Arithmancy, February 7, 2019

Unfortunately these links went to Craftster, which is no longer a functioning website, so I don’t have a record of what these projects were. If you know and would like to update the information, I can do that as well! Thanks!

I’m still working on mine! I don’t have my original description, but it was to practice my quilting by making some Too Cool style t-shirt quilts from old t-shirts.

I have 3 small tops made & have a few more t-shirts to cut up & more t-shirt fabric to use:

Project Name & Page Link: mindless dish cloth
Brief Description: I find the back and forth simple and repetitive nature of “grandma’s favorite dishcloth” calming. Often I want to be crafting but just don’t have the mental bandwidth for following a pattern or learning something new. This is my antidote for those times. And bonus: this finished off my purple Lily sugar n creme.

Class or Challenge Title: Iron Chef - February
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name & Page Link: Lohikeitto or Finnish Salmon-soup
Brief Description: The original plan was japanese curry, but since I lacked both ingredients and energy I went for the Finnish soup instead. First time doing it, and it was such a good soup! Im so happy and will make it again!

The recipe:
1 litre of water
300 g salmon, diced
2 cubes of fish broth (for 1 litre of water)
3-4 potatoes, diced
3-4 carrots, diced
1 yellow onion, finely diced
Salt
Pepper
1,5 dl creme
Fresh dill, chopped into tiny pieces

Boil the water and the broth cubes, add the vegetables and let boil for 5-7 minutes. Add the salmon and boil under lid for 5 more minutes.
Add the dill and creme and leave it with the lid on, for 5 minutes or so. Turn of the stove when you have added the creme.

Serve with rye bread or crisp bread. Very good, and easy to make!

Project Picture:

Class/Challenge: Hermione’s Book Club, Chapter 5
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Three Cheese Meatball Mostaccioli
Brief Description: For this challenge, I made dinner to share with my boyfriend! I used this recipe from a Taste of Home cookbook & served it with garlic breadsticks and a salad.

I made a few changes based on what ingredients I had available: penne noodles instead of mostaccioli, a sprinkle of onion powder instead of a chopped onion, mozzarella instead of romano cheese, homestyle meatballs instead of italian, mushroom pasta sauce instead of meat, and I added ~1/3 of a jar of the pasta sauce because I had some in the fridge I needed to use.

It turned out well (even though the tops of the meatballs burned a little), but I’ll probably halve the recipe if I make it again because it was a lot of food.
