Pin Event: 60’s
Bingo Square: Embroidery
Prompt: June - Hipster Fashion/Add a mustache – craft something to wear, that is made of fabric, or has a mustache. (It is made to be worn)
Team: Extra Epic
Project Name: Visibly Mended Jeans
Project Link: Visibly Mended Jeans
Brief Description: From what I’ve been lead to believe, threadbare jeans in the 60’s were “held together mostly by patches and embroidery worn by the free-loving, long-haired war protestors and became a symbol of their time.” These are certainly following that trend of being more patch and embroidery thread than actual jeans fabric.

Project Name: Cats and Books Cross Stitch
Project Link: Cats and Books cross stitch
Brief Description: @LovelyMiss sent this wonderful cross stitch kit as part of last season’s Nerd Games prizes. Having never cross stitched before, I though I would give it a go. I really enjoyed it. It was a very zen project is a time of chaos. How does it relate to the 00’s? When I was away at college in the early 00’s my mom sent me this shirt in a care package

this cross stitch pattern strongly reminds me of it, which is part of why I like it so much I think. (and now my daughter wears the shirt as PJs, so it is still getting love).

Project Name: Green Man Wall Mask

Project Link: Green Man Wall Mask

Brief Description: This guy fits the theme because he’s green.

As far as the pin challenge… in my post (at the link) I mentioned thinking of the green man in the lady chapel of Ely Cathedral, where all the religious figures lost their heads in the reformation, but the green man survived. This same chapel aquired a new controversial statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the year 2000.

Project Name: Opihi Vase

Project Link: Some carved vases with opihi and he'e

Brief Description: I handcarved this vase with opihi design. Opihi are a type of limpet in Hawaii. They were being over-harvested, so the first laws were put into place to regulate the collection of them in the year 2006.

Project Name: 'i’iwi vase

Project Link: Some carved vases with opihi and he'e

Brief Description: Oh my gosh. I totally busted a hole in this vas mid-carving and thought it would be a disaster. I usually don’t try to fix things like this, but the sunk cost thing is REAL. AnywY, I managed to patch the hole, even though the clay was drying fast at that point, and it’s finally done with no issues I can tell!

This bowl depicts an O’ahu 'ō’ō. There were several slightly different species of 'ō’ō on a handful of islands, and although this bird was last seen in the early half of the 19th century, its relative, rhe Kaua’i 'ō’ō was last seen in 1985 and last heard in 1987.

Event BINGO (80s)square AND Pin Challenge: '60s (bear with me!)

Team: Totally Radical

Project Name: Upcycled Mylar Chomper

Project Link: Upcycled Mylar Chomper

Brief Description: When I got my BINGO card and saw “plastic canvas” under the '80s column, I really wanted to make one of those “Kiss’n Critters” (photo below) I remember from my childhood, and also wanted to make it neon (because you know, extra 80s). I didn’t have plastic canvas, but I ended up using mylar from a can of coffee to make this dude. Mylar was relatively new when it was used in Echo II a giant balloon sattelite which launched in 1964 by NASA. The mylar layered between two thin layers of aluminum allowed the balloon to remain rigid enough, yet flexible enough, especially in the case of puncture, rtc. Pretty cool!

Brief Description: I got stuck on doilies when thinking about my lace “bingo” square. I’m not really a crochet-er (and haven’t crocheted in a bit) so I found this pretty simple pattern which I actually like. I would say it’s brightly colored.
Neon is totally 80s.
